Equipment

I would like to try skiing with Five Winds. Do I need to purchase any special equipment before I come out for the first time?

No, if you have cross-country skis in good condition you can use them on your first day. As a new member, you will be placed in a slower group to give you an opportunity to get used to the trails. (After that first day we’ll find the right group for you.) Five Winds members love to talk about ski gear and someone will be happy to help you decide what equipment you should buy.

Some information about equipment suitable for Five Winds trails is posted here.

What type of skis do I need?

We use touring skis which are a bit wider than normal cross country skis. Find out more by looking at the information on equipment.

Should I get waxless or waxable skis?

If you know all about wax and you like to wax then waxable skis may be for you. Five Winds members love to discus snow conditions and wax before they get off the bus. If you don’t want to wax then buy waxless skis which only need a bit of attention in very warm conditions. Someone will help you. When the temperature is around freezing, waxless skis are often your best option.

Many Five Winds members have both waxless and waxable skis and decide which to use when they get off the bus. If you are going to have one pair of skis think about which will be best for you.

What type of clothing do I need for backcountry skiing?

You need layers that keep you warm and layers that break the wind. Your group will probably stop a few times in the day to add and remove layers as they warm up and cool down. More information about clothing is available on this site.
