Safety

Is it dangerous?

We take safety seriously. Five Winds has been skiing this territory for over 30 years without a serious incident. That said, backcountry skiing takes us into the wilderness and that has its risks.

We are guided by rules, knowledge and experience. We ski in small groups of about six to eight people, small enough for manageability but large enough so that if we have an incident we can manage it. We invest in safety training and seminars. We have and review procedures for what to do in the case that someone should return to the bus or needs emergency attention. We pay attention to preparation, fitness, gear and food and we avoid dangerous situations. We watch the weather and change our plans if warranted.

Did you know that the car ride to and from a day of skiing is one of the most dangerous aspects of skiing in the north? The bus ride to and from our trails is one of our safety features.

What preparations should I make for a ski day?

It’s a good idea to check the equipment list every time you prepare to ski. Some of your gear won’t leave your pack from week to week, but some of it might need to be found again. Think about your needs and likes for snacks, meals and drinks, both warm and cold – and then bring a bit extra.

Bring identification and a copy of your health card.
